STORY

P.A.M.E.L.A. tells the tale of Sleeper, someone that has awoken in a futuristic Utopian world called Eden. However, some time during that sleep, Eden has fallen and death is everywhere. When the player finally arises and moves around one meets PAMELA. It is a huge monolithic entity who was once meant to watch over Eden during its prime.

As one journeys through the remnants of Eden, the player uses notes and records to discover what went wrong. In the midst of this mystery, the dead arise to kill Sleeper. The game is very much like survival horror at first, with limited resources and having to move around enemies until a weapon is found. And even then, the enemies are hard to take out.

Without spoiling the rest of the story, the game keeps one very much interested with its narrative and fostering that desire to solve the mysteries within. One gets to meet various factions, such as afflicted citizens, droids, robot custodians and greater enemies that might make many run away.

GAMEPLAY

Moving around the ship is very smooth, especially on the PC. It is great that they employed much of the same controls as most FPS games so that one can focus on the game itself.

Having said that, much of the game involves scavenging for parts and enhancing weaponry in order to face the upcoming unknown enemy. Many deaths have been encountered while searching Eden for better parts. There is a steep learning curve at the start without too much guidance, which makes the game very exhilarating.

The AI or NPCs in the game were designed to react to the behaviour of the player. This means that much of the players actions will result in factions either siding with or against you. This means that one has to be extra careful with not only the decisions made but some of the actions taken too.

SOUND AND GRAPHICS

This is where the game truly shines. The graphics are absolutely fantastic. Colours and items are pristine, and there are shades of darkness and light that play just right in all the correct places. When the light reaches the player, one can almost feel the warmth. Much of the scenes set out are there to truly terrify players for a moment, wondering what the shadow was that danced across the floor.

The sound also makes great atmosphere. There are some truly ominous moments where one has to stand still for a few moments to first see if it is safe to continue. Sometimes it is very silent, hinting at the massive emptiness of Eden. The sounds and music that is triggered when a battle begins have been balanced wonderfully.

FINAL VERDICT

P.A.M.E.L.A is a fantastic science fictions, post-apocalyptic game that sets all the right tones for a truly remarkable experience. The graphics and sounds really brings out that suspense and thrill of scavenging through a haunted town while trying to survive. While many may become frustrated by having to search for crafting items just to die at the next battle, it will test the best players out there while providing an amazing story that should be novelised or adapted to film in this writer’s opinion.

With fantastic graphics and sound, and a great story to drive the hearts of all gamers towards solving the mystery of fallen Eden, Mothergunship earns 9/10.
