If you were excited for the 22 November 2019 launch date for Doom Eternal, there is a bit of sad news (or good, depends how you look at it). We’ve received an email from Bethesda regarding information published by ID Software indicating that the launch date has moved to 20 March 2020. This information has also been confirmed in a recent tweet on the Doom feed on Twitter:
So besides the new launch date (for those of you who can’t access the Twitter information), with major apologies for the delay, here are the changes that have been indicated in the letter:
• Invasion Mode, which will allow you to enter another player’s game as a playable demon, will release as a free update shortly after launch.
• DOOM Eternal for Nintendo Switch will release after the other platforms. We will announce that date in the future.
• DOOM 64 will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC in addition to Nintendo Switch. We are adding DOOM 64 as a pre-order bonus for DOOM Eternal on all platforms so you’ll be able to download and play this classic game, for free, just for pre-ordering DOOM Eternal. DOOM 64 will be released on March 20, 2020 on all platforms.
The only information we have received for the reasons for the delay is that they want to spend more time perfecting the game to their standards, which is perfectly fine with me. I’d rather have a great game at launch than something which fails completely.
We will continue to keep tabs on any further news for Doom Eternal.
