Nintendo Direct 13/09/17 Write up

Today was a great day for Nintendo fans as the newest edition of the video presentations Nintendo Direct aired to keep gamers up to date with the latest Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch News.
The direct opened with Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, which releases on 17/11/17 Worldwide, and revealed 4 points of information for the upcoming titles:

  1. Necrozma is the key to the story and has fused with the Legendary Pokémon to create Dusk Mane Solgaleo and Dawn Wings Lunaala.
  2. There are new areas of Alola to explore including a beach and a Pikachu valley. There is also a new style for the main characters as well as new clothing options.
  3. There are different bonuses available for the game, including a special Rockruff that evolves into the new Dusk Form Lycanroc – available if you purchase the game before 10/01/18. If you download the game from the Nintendo eShop you will receive 12 quick balls for use in game. Finally if you purchase the 3DS eShop releases of Pokémon Gold or Pokémon Silver (available on 22/09/17) you will receive the mythical Pokémon Celebii for Pokémon Sun/Pokémon Moon/Pokémon Ultra Sun/Pokémon Ultra Moon. Pre-purchase for Pokémon Gold and Silver begins today.
  4. Finally, two new Ultra Beasts will be appearing in the games, UB-Burst and UB-Assembly will be available in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon respectively.

There was also a reveal of a Pokéball themed New Nintendo 2DS XL Console which is available on 03/11/17.
Next up came Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions. It touches on the new available mode in the game called Minions Quest where you play as a Goomba amongst others of Bowser’s Minions. It is also shown that certain amiibo are compatible with the game to collect stamps for stamp sheets in game. These stamp sheets help you earn new equipment. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions launches on 06/10/17.

Following on from Mario and Luigi was Kirby Battle Royale for Nintendo 3DS, which is a new battle game. It features modes such as Battle Arena where 4 different Kirby’s face off, Ore Express mode where you hoard treasure and keep your opponents at bay. There is also a single player mode as well as online battles. Kirby Battle Royale releases on 19/01/18. Nintendo are also holding a poll to celebrate Kirby’s 25th anniversary, to decide which is Kirby’s greatest copy ability. Vote here!
Next up came the 7th installment in the Layton series titled Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire’s Conspiracy. The game features the daughter of Professor Layton; Katrielle. It contains all the usual puzzle solving gameplay that the Layton series is famous for. The 3DS Version contains a special outfit for Katrielle that isn’t available in the mobile release for this game. Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire’s Conspiracy launches on Nintendo 3DS on 06/10/17.
Nintendo moved on to show a new Style Boutique game, New Style Boutique 3: Styling Star. As in the previous games you run a Style Boutique where you assist people with buying new outfits. In this game however the customers stories can change based on the outfits chosen for them. New Style Boutique 3: Styling Star is available on 24/11/17
For the next release, Nintendo showed Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS edition. The game comes with 5 skin packs and 2 texture packs built in and can run both creative and survival modes. There are also touch screen controls available to use in game. This new version of Minecraft will be released soon on the Nintendo eShop (no date is given at this time) with a retail packaged version coming later down the line.

Another new title is then revealed: Mario Party The Top 100. This version of Mario Party contains the top 100 minigames from all the Mario Party series, all on one game available for the Nintendo 3DS. This new Mario Party is available in January 2018.
Following on from Mario Party, Nintendo quickly shows another trailer for the 3DS remake title Metroid: Samus Returns which launches on 15/09/17. Then the audience is shown the New Nintendo 3DS XL SNES Edition, available 13/10/17 along with 3 new entries to the Nintendo Selects Range: Kirby Triple Deluxe, Luigi’s Mansion 2 and Super Mario 3D Land.
Moving on from these another new 3DS game from Atlus is revealed, called The Alliance Alive. It is shown to be a JRPG style game and is coming in Early 2018. Also shown here is Fire Emblem Warriors for New Nintendo 3DS which is available 20/10/17, a demo for Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth is to be made available today and Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney which is available in November 2017.

The presentation now moves over to the Nintendo Switch and begins with a new trailer and in depth look at Xenoblade Chronicles 2. It details the world of Alrest “A world covered in a sea of clouds”. More story, battle and character details are also given an in depth look using in game footage. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 releases on 1/12/17 for Nintendo Switch and will also be available in a collectors edition. There is also a new Pro Controller design releasing for this game.
Splatoon 2 comes next and features 3 points of update for the online shooter.

  1. Kelp Dome stage from the Wii U game Splatoon is returning for Splatoon 2, available from 16/09/17
  2. A new stage called Snapper Canal will arrive soon
  3. A new umbrella weapon: The Tenta Brella will also be added soon.

Fire Emblem Warriors for Nintendo Switch is the next game to be shown. Lyn from the Game Boy Advance Fire Emblem games is revealed as a playable character. Fire Emblem Warriors releases on 20/10/17 and is also available in a collectors edition. There will also be amiibo of characters Chrom and Tiki available at the same time.
Snipperclips comes next, an updated version of this eShop title Snipperclips Plus is coming which features 30 new stages, comic book and toybox themed levels as well as new ways to play the original levels where the game will assign you a different shape. Snipperclips Plus will be available to purchase on 10/11/17 as DLC or as the full game.
An indie game titled Morphie’s Law is next to be shown. This multiplayer game features a style of gameplay where shooting at each other allows you to steal mass from your opponents and add it onto yourself. The idea is to steal the most mass from your opponents team until your team avatar becomes the largest. This new shooter is a Nintendo Switch console exclusive and releases in Winter 2017.
Rocket League is next on the Direct, and we are shown that there is a Mario car, a Luigi car, a Samus’ Gunship car, Mario and Luigi car toppers and a new local wireless mode available alongside all the game modes that are on other consoles. Rocket League comes to Nintendo Switch in Winter 2017.
NintendoLeague
A new title Arena of Valor is next to be shown, an online team battling game featuring over 35 heroes. Features types such as Tank, Assassin, Mage, Support, Warriors and Marksmen. A Beta Test for the game is coming in Winter 2017.
A quick reel from Bethesda is shown next, featuring The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Nintendo Switch, which features the Hero’s Tunic, Master Sword and Hylian Shield from the Legend of Zelda series. Obtainable by scanning a compatible Legend of Zelda amiibo. This version of Skyrim will release on 17/11/17. Also featured from Bethesda are DOOM which is coming to the Nintendo Switch in Winter 2017 and Wolfenstein 2 coming in 2018.
eShop title Flip Wars is given a mention next, and an update is coming to improve the game. The update will feature online leaderboards and local wireless gameplay. The free update for the game is listed as Coming Soon.
Next up Nintendo introduces it’s Arcade Archives, a way to re-release old arcade based Nintendo games for the Nintendo Switch. Each release of an arcade game will feature elements that were only found on the arcade versions of the games. The first title from the Arcade Archive will be Mario Bros. on 27/09/17. Other titles that will release in this way include Balloon Fight, Ice Climbers, Pinball and Clu Clu Land. These games all now feature VS Mode.
amiibo are shown next, specifically the Champions amiibo for Legend of Zelda: Breath of the wild. Each amiibo can be scanned in game to unlock a special set of armor which corresponds to that champions Divine Beast. These amiibo release as a special set of 4 on 10/11/17.
Another quick reel is shown, this time for sports related titles. NBA 2K18 for Nintendo Switch is releasing digitally on 15/09/17 with physical release planned for 17/10/17. WWE 2K18 is also being made available for the Nintendo Switch soon. EA Sports Fifa 18 is releasing on 29/09/17 and finally in this section Pokken Tournament DX is shown, an updated version of the Wii U release which adds in 5 new playable Pokemon. Pokken Tournament DX releases on 22/09/17.

The next title shown for Nintendo Switch is the upcoming game with the working title “Project Octopath Traveller”. The JRPG is set in the Land of Osterra and features what the game developers refer to as HD-2D. Battles and characters are detailed further in the trailer, and a demo is announced to release today.
ARMS’ update version 3 is next in the Direct, which features new character Lola Pop with her 3 new ARMS; Funchuk, Biffler and Clapback. The new update also allows you to re-map the in game controls to better suit your play style. This update for ARMS is available today.
Nintendo reveal that Dragon Quest Builders is to be released on Nintendo Switch in Spring 2018. The game features fully buildable worlds mixed with storylines to provide a fun game experience.
The new Kirby title – Kirby Star Allies is shown next. It features 4 player co-op play with Kirby being able to use different abilities to fight through various worlds and battle a variety of enemies. This game will released in Spring 2018.
A trailer reel for indie games is shown next which features:

  1. Steam World Dig 2
  2. Golf Story
  3. Nine Parchments
  4. Battle Chef Brigade
  5. Tiny Metal
  6. Super Meat Boy Forever

In another quick roundup Nintendo shows Lost Sphear which releases on 23/01/18, Sonic Forces which releases on 7/11/17, Resident Evil: Revelations 1 and 2 which release on 28/11/17 and finally L.A. Noire which releases on 14/11/17.
OdysseyNintendo uses Super Mario Odyssey to close out this Nintendo Direct, showing new gameplay and story information. Mario teams up with new ally Cappy after Bowser kidnaps and intends to marry Princess Peach. Peach is also shown to be wearing Cappy’s sister Tiara as part of her wedding outfit. The game shows off two new kingdoms, The Seaside and Snow Kingdoms. Next up we see more of Mario’s ship The Odyssey, which he will use to travel from kingdom to kingdom in game. It can also be customised with statues and stickers from the various kingdoms.
Super Mario Odyssey features a large number of collectible Power Moons, and there are different methods you can use to track them down. Talkatoo the bird will provide hints, as well as Hint Toad and Uncle amiibo. There are also minigames available in game which can earn you Power Moons, but can also be enjoyed for fun. These minigames will also feature Online Rankings.
A new mode is also shown called Snapshot Mode, which can be used to photograph Mario in the game, add filters to the image, add in logo text and even create a mobile phone wallpaper. These images can also be shared to social media.
Finally the amiibo are revealed to be releasing on the same day as the game on 28/10/17 and each amiibo can unlock an in game wedding outfit as well as having an individual use. The Mario amiibo will grant you temporary invincibility, Princess Peach’s amiibo will grant you a one up heart and Bowser’s amiibo will reveal regional coin locations. Nintendo also show a Super Mario Odyssey Nintendo Switch bundle which features 2 red Joy Con, and a new Nintendo Switch Carry case which will be made available.
